According to the leading superbowl websites, Super Bowl 2009 kickoff will probably be a little after 6:30 PM Eastern Standard Time. As we saw last year, different official sites list different official kickoff times.

NBC, which is broadcasting the game, writes clearly “kickoff 6:00 PM” — but they do have an interest in getting people to tune in early.

The NFL’s superbowl.com site is counting down to 6:20, and this is the time that most websites are using as official.

The Super Bowl 2009 hosting committee lists kickoff time as “approximately 6:28” though the countdown on their site is counting down to 6:00.

Last year, FOX (which was broadcasting the game) announced kickoff for 6:17, the NFL said 6:18, and the site hosting the Super Bowl said 6:30. Actual kickoff was 6:32.

So if you’d like to hear some of Journey’s performance, Jennifer Hudson singing the National Anthem, and catch some of the pre-game hype, turn on your sets by 6. But don’t expect the game to actually start before 6:30.

Quick additional tidbits:

Date: February 1, 2009

Location: Tampa, Florida

Teams: Pittsburgh Steelers & Arizona Cardinals

National Anthem: Jennifer Hudson

Halftime: Bruce Springsteen

Super Bowl Number: 43 (XLIII)

“Hello. I’m calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge’s home and killed Americans. And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democratic allies lack the judgment to lead our country. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee at 202-863-8500.”

Here is the robocall’s full audio.

This is just one of the thousands of Political Robocalls from both parties that have been flooding phone lines in battleground states. According to a recent report by CNN, some voters are receiving as many as a dozen automated calls per day.

Some states, like Maine, are cracking down, claiming this is a violation of personal privacy.

According to Wikipedia, even those who have opted into the National Do Not Call Registry may still receive these calls, as political parties are exempt from the rules set forth during the formation of this registry.

Are these calls really effective, and why should we have to put up with this violation of our personal privacy?

Comment below to join the petition.

A natural disaster like Hurricane Ike can be safely managed, assuming people follow the recommendations of local authorities, secure their homes, and if needed leave town.

A disaster can also put a strain on local law enforcement officials and thus ‘post-hurricane’ has always been a popular time for crooks to take advantage of empty homes and businesses.

As a victim of multiple robberies to both my business and home, I have the following advice for protecting your most valuable assets – your privacy, personal documents and identity:

1. Don’t put all of your important documents in one safe, if the safe can be removed from your home or is not fire and waterproof. I lost everything important, including passports, deeds and social security cards when a thief simply ripped the safe out of the wall and ran.

2. Prepare a grab bag of important items when a storm is approaching. You will need to leave quickly, and it is important not to leave important paperwork and ID’s behind.

3. Make sure if you are leaving computers, that they are backed up and password protected. Most thieves will simply try to pawn your electronics, and if there is no password, the next user will have full access.

4. If you use a browser-based password tool, make sure you set a master password.

5. Take prescriptions with you. Multiple times thieves have stolen medication.

6. Remember that in a loss of power or phone, most security systems don’t work. If they do work, it is very unlikely that the police or monitoring center will be notified.

Any natural disaster can be handled in a way as to minimize damage and loss. Taking a few precautions can help you protect you and your family.
