First off, what is the ECPA? It is Electronic Communications Privacy Act. “It protects wire, oral, and electronic communications while in transit.”
The proposed Amendments to ECPA would “restrict disclosure of geolocation data.” “It would extend legal protections on any information collected and maintained by electronic communications service provider.” This obviously being any mobile device known to man.
Who was this bill originally introduced by? The Judiciary Committee Chairman and Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy. Modern technology is obviously ever changing and advancing so it’s only natural that a bill to extend the ECPA of 1986, wouldn’t you agree?
What do you think of the ECPA Amendments Act of 2011? Is it relevant for today? Should their be changes to protect one’s privacy on cell phones, etc.? Please share your thoughts and views on the ECPA, we would love to hear from you.
